Day 7 of UIR

I have learnt a lot during my UIR lessons. One of the most important thing I've learnt is being able to learn the differences between various search engine such as Google, Metacrawler and Yahoo. Not only that, I've also learnt what are subject directories, which I was not aware of previously. Through UIR lessons, I've gained more useful knowledge and of course learning more new things. From what I have learnt, I can use it to apply in my future projects, be it school work or future work.

Though I've never used Friendster, in my opinion, I feel that Friendster is much more popular as compared to Facebook as most of my friends are using it.

Today in class, we discussed about a website www.talkingcock.com, whereby we had to play roles of the prime minister, singaporean and foreigner and voice our views on the website content.

Day 6 of UIR

I have learnt how to evaluate selected Internet resources based on identified criteria. I've also learnt purpose, coverage, authority, accuracy, currency, accessibility, presentation and arrangement and usability.

Day 5 of UIR

Its day 5 of UIR. I have learnt the differences between different search engines, like Google, Metacrawler and Yahoo. They have their similarities and differences.

We used keyword variations to help us in finding the topic that we are researching on.
Variations like - usage of 2 factor authentication in banking industry and authentication methods used in the banking industry.

The search engines gave the following search results:

Google returned about 600000 results
Yahoo returned about 200000 results
Metacrawler returned about 80 results

The common similarity between the 3 search engines are that they do return websites that give definitions of what is 2 factor authentication http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-factor_authentication.

The differences is that Metacrawler gives specific search results like why 2 factor authentication is used, how is 2 factor authentication used, the effect of 2 factor authentication, while Yahoo and Google do not give as much specific search results like Metacrawler.

Also, Google and Yahoo returned many irrelevant results starting from page 5 results.

Therefore, Metacrawler is the best among all 3.

Day 3 of UIR

I have learnt how to identify the different purposes of internet resources, compare the different purposes of internet resources. also post a new topic on the discussion forum and create 2 site feeds of my classmates
